The design's name, Intermission, refers to the break time during theatre performances. The designers, drawing inspiration from the client's profession as a performing artist, incorporated elements of theatre into the space. The L-shaped axis of the design breaks traditional rules to connect different areas fluently, much like a stage play scene. Through a dark, low-color tonality and reflective materials, a quiet, calming space is created for the client's soul to rest at home.
The unique properties of this design lie in its theatrical elements. The use of black materials creates different layers in the space, and the visual concept of stage lighting brings a beam of light into the quiet, black space. This allows the owner to enjoy the light of their own stage quietly, providing not only a calming environment for their mind and soul but also a rest for their body in preparation for the next prelude.
The design was realized using a range of materials including titanium plating, stainless steel plate, stone skin, natural veneer, large picture wallpaper, iron parts, system cabinet, and wooden floor. The project, which covers 128 square meters, was completed in Taipei, Taiwan. The design concept was derived from the idea of a black box theatre, a simple, unadorned performance space that can be used flexibly to create a stage.
One of the challenges faced during the design process was to open the public area by breaking the fourth wall of the space, connecting the living room, study room, dining room, and kitchen. Despite these challenges, the design was successful and has been recognized with a Silver A' Interior Space, Retail and Exhibition Design Award in 2019. This award is given to top-of-the-line, creative, and professionally remarkable designs that illustrate outstanding expertise and innovation.
In conclusion, Intermission is a unique residential interior design that successfully blends elements of theatre and living space. The design, which was inspired by the concept of life as a series of scenes, provides a quiet, calming environment for the client to rest and rejuvenate. With its innovative design and recognition from the prestigious A' Design Award, Intermission is a testament to the creativity and expertise of designers Guan-Ying Lee, Chia-Yin Hsieh and JunXian-Lin.
